Are you a Dragon?
The zodiac year doesn’t start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which falls anywhere from 21 January to 20 February. So if you were born in January or February, your birth year alone can’t tell you your animal. Enter your full date of birth for the exact answer.

Dates follow the lunar calendar’s New Year, the convention used for the zodiac in everyday Chinese life. Some fortune-tellers instead start the year at 立春 (lìchūn, Start of Spring, around 4 February), so a few early-February birthdays get read differently. In 2036 New Year comes first, on 28 January, and 立春 follows on 4 February, so a birthday from 28 January to 3 February is a Dragon by the lunar calendar but still a Rabbit by the 立春 count.
How to write 龙, and the creature behind it
龙 (lóng) began as a picture of an animal nobody has ever seen. On Shang oracle bones it is a beast with a gaping mouth and a crest on its head, its long body curling round into an S, more snake than lizard. Scholars still debate what inspired it: snakes, crocodiles and even thunder have all been proposed. Over the centuries the open mouth turned into 月, here a form of 肉 (flesh), and the body into a row of fins, giving the traditional 龍 its 16 strokes. The simplified form keeps just a quick sketch of the creature in five.

Six characters built from 龙
The dragon is the grandest animal in the zodiac, yet inside other characters 龙 nearly always does a humble job: it lends its sound. Only now and then does it bring the dragon itself. Tap the speaker to hear each one.

A dragon that brings rain, not fire
“Dragon” is the best English has, but 龙 is a different creature. The Western dragon is a fire-breathing villain for a knight to slay. The Chinese dragon is a wingless, mostly benevolent power of water and weather, linked with rain, rivers and the sea. The Shuowen Jiezi calls it the chief of all scaled creatures, able to grow huge or tiny at will, rising to the sky at the spring equinox and diving into the depths at the autumn equinox. In everyday Chinese, 龙 also turns up in some unexpected words:
恐龙
kǒnglóng
Dinosaur. Literally “terrifying 龙”, a modern coinage.
龙卷风
lóngjuǎnfēng
Tornado. Literally “dragon-coiling wind”.
水龙头
shuǐlóngtóu
Tap or faucet. Literally “water dragon head”.
火龙果
huǒlóngguǒ
Dragon fruit. Literally “fire dragon fruit”.
For centuries the dragon was also the emblem of the emperor, and its prestige never faded. Parents still say 望子成龙 (wàng zǐ chéng lóng), “hoping your son becomes a dragon”, for the high hopes they hold for a child. Calling someone a dragon in Chinese is a compliment.
The Dragon personality
Zodiac personalities are folk tradition, not science, and Chinese people treat them much the way others treat star signs: half seriously, often with a smile. Still, the character traditionally given to people born in the Year of the Dragon is remarkably consistent across almanacs. It’s the most commanding of the twelve, and traditionally the most admired.
Confident
zìxìn. Dragons are said to walk into a room as if they belong there, and usually they do.
Ambitious
xióngxīn bóbó. An idiom for ambition bursting at the seams. Dragons aim high and expect to get there.
Passionate
rèqíng. Warm, energetic and enthusiastic, the friend who turns a plan into an adventure.
Generous
kāngkǎi. Big-hearted with time, praise and money. A Dragon likes to share its good fortune.
And the other side
Proud
jiāo’ào. Confidence can tip into arrogance, and Dragons don’t always notice when it does.
Impatient
jízào. Slow people and slow plans test a Dragon’s temper.
Stubborn
gùzhí. Once a Dragon has decided, changing its mind takes a great deal of persuading.
Competitive
hàoqiáng. Dragons hate to lose, even at cards, and can find it hard to let others shine.
Lucky things, by tradition
Almanacs don’t fully agree on the Dragon’s lucky charms, and we’d rather show you that than pretend otherwise. Here is what the major sources share, and where they split.
| Lucky | What the sources say | Agreement |
|---|---|---|
| Numbers | 1, 6 and 7, and numbers made of them, such as 16 or 67 | Agreed |
| Colours | Gold, silver and greyish white everywhere, plus red and purple in some lists | Mostly |
| Flowers | Bleeding-heart glory bower in some lists, lucky bamboo, anthurium and clivia in others | Disputed |
| Numbers to avoid | 3 and 8 in every list, with 9 added in some | Mostly |
Which Dragon are you? The five elements
Every animal returns once every 12 years, but it pairs with each of the five elements only once every 60. So a 1976 Dragon and a 2036 Dragon share both animal and element: both are Fire Dragons.
甲辰 jiǎchén · 1964 · 2024
The Wood Dragon is said to be the most creative and open-minded of the five: curious, inventive and generous with ideas. Its traditional caution is to finish what it starts. 2024 was a Wood Dragon year.
丙辰 bǐngchén · 1976 · 2036
The Fire Dragon is the most intense Dragon: passionate, outspoken and a born leader, with ambition to match. Tradition warns that its temper burns as hot as its drive. 2036 is a Fire Dragon year.
戊辰 wùchén · 1928 · 1988 · 2048
Earth is the Dragon’s own fixed element, so the Earth Dragon is the steadiest: calm, practical and dependable. It’s said to listen more and command less than other Dragons.
庚辰 gēngchén · 1940 · 2000
The Metal Dragon is said to be the strongest-willed of the five: determined, principled and unafraid of a fight. Its challenge is to bend when bending is wiser.
壬辰 rénchén · 1952 · 2012
The Water Dragon is the most flexible Dragon: perceptive, diplomatic and patient. Water is said to soften the Dragon’s fire into quiet confidence.
Dragon compatibility
Zodiac compatibility isn’t a list of opinions. It’s geometry. Place the twelve animals around a circle, and the classic matches form fixed shapes: triangles of allies, pairs of secret friends, and opposites that clash. Here is the Dragon’s position.
- Best: Rat 鼠 and Monkey 猴The Three Harmonies (三合 sānhé), the green triangle. These three share drive and confidence and are traditionally the strongest pairing for friendship, business or marriage.
- Secret friend: Rooster 鸡The Six Harmonies (六合 liùhé), the gold line. The Rooster’s precision and the Dragon’s vision are said to make a powerful team.
- Clash: Dog 狗The Six Conflicts (六冲 liùchōng), straight across the circle. Two proud, principled signs that tradition says find it hard to give way to each other.
- Friction: Rabbit 兔The Six Harms (六害 liùhài), the dashed line. A milder mismatch: the gentle Rabbit and the forceful Dragon need patience on both sides.
See the other pairings from each side: the Rat, the Monkey, the Rooster and the Dog.
The Dragon in Chinese culture
画龙点睛 Dot the dragon’s eyes
huà lóng diǎn jīng. The Tang writer Zhang Yanyuan records that the painter Zhang Sengyou painted four dragons on a temple wall in Jinling but left their eyes blank. When he was pressed to dot them, thunder split the wall and two dragons flew off into the sky. Today it means the finishing touch that brings work to life. One of the best-known Chinese idioms. Read the full story of 画龙点睛.
叶公好龙 Lord Ye loves dragons
Yè gōng hào lóng. A Han-dynasty parable in Liu Xiang’s New Prefaces tells of a lord who covered his home in carved and painted dragons. When a real dragon heard of it and came to visit, he fled in terror. The idiom describes someone who claims to love a thing but doesn’t really.
赛龙舟 Dragon boat racing
sài lóngzhōu. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the Dragon Boat Festival (端午节 Duānwǔ Jié), teams race long boats with dragon heads to the beat of a drum. Legend links the races to the poet Qu Yuan, whom villagers rowed out to save from a river. The festival is on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
龙井茶 Dragon Well tea
Lóngjǐng chá. China’s most famous green tea grows in the hills around Hangzhou’s West Lake. It takes its name from Dragon Well, a spring where, legend says, a dragon once lived. Read more in our Zhejiang guide.

The Year of the Fire Dragon, 2036
The Fire Dragon year, 丙辰年 (bǐngchén nián), runs from 28 January 2036 to 14 February 2037. A leap sixth month makes it thirteen lunar months long. Fire is said to add heat to the Dragon’s ambition, so tradition reads 2036 as a year for bold starts, leadership and big plans. For the festival itself, the customs and the greetings, see our guide to the Spring Festival.
běnmìngnián, “your own zodiac year”. If you were born in a Dragon year (2024, 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976…), 2036 is your 本命年. Tradition says it’s a year to be careful, so many people wear something red all year round, often red socks, a red string bracelet or red underwear, which shops sell in a rush before every New Year.
Talk about your sign in Mandarin
Asking someone’s zodiac animal is one of the most natural small-talk questions in Chinese, and a polite way to guess an age without asking. Here is the whole conversation.
我属龙
wǒ shǔ lóng
“I’m a Dragon,” literally “I belong to the dragon”.
你属什么?
nǐ shǔ shénme?
“What’s your zodiac sign?”
你也属龙吗?
nǐ yě shǔ lóng ma?
“Are you a Dragon too?”
今年是我的本命年。
jīnnián shì wǒ de běnmìngnián.
“This year is my zodiac year.”
Common misunderstandings
- “I was born on 2 February 1977, so I’m a Snake.” Not quite: the Snake year only began on 18 February 1977, so you’re a Fire Dragon, like Shakira. Check any date with the tool above.
- “Chinese dragons breathe fire and hoard gold.” That’s the Western dragon. The Chinese 龙 belongs to water: in folk religion the Dragon Kings (龙王 lóngwáng) rule the seas and send the rain.
- “恐龙 is a kind of dragon.” It’s the everyday word for a dinosaur. Palaeontology keeps the pattern: 霸王龙 bàwánglóng, literally “tyrant king 龙”, is T. rex.
- “The Dragon is the luckiest sign, so it gets on with everyone.” Tradition gives it a clash sign like every other animal: the Dog, sitting directly opposite on the zodiac wheel.

FAQs
The Year of the Dragon comes round every 12 years: 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024 and 2036. Each one starts at Chinese New Year rather than on 1 January. The next begins on 28 January 2036 and runs to 14 February 2037.
Yes. 2036 is a Fire Dragon year (丙辰 bǐngchén). It begins on 28 January 2036. Anyone born between 1 and 27 January 2036 is still a Rabbit, the sign of the year before.
No. The Chinese 龙 (lóng) is a wingless, mostly benevolent creature of water and rain, long the emblem of the emperor and a symbol of good fortune. The fire-breathing monster of European legend is a different creature that happens to share the English name. In Chinese, calling someone a dragon is praise.
Traditionally the Rat and the Monkey, which form the Three Harmonies (三合) with the Dragon, and the Rooster, its Six Harmonies (六合) partner. The Dog is the Dragon’s clash sign, sitting directly opposite on the zodiac wheel.
The sources agree on 1, 6 and 7 as the Dragon’s lucky numbers, and on gold, silver and greyish white as its colours, with red and purple added in some lists. Its lucky flowers vary from almanac to almanac. These are folk associations, so treat them as tradition rather than rules.
The Dragon’s fixed element is Earth, and it’s a yang sign. Each Dragon year also carries a rotating element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water), set by the year’s heavenly stem. 2036 is Fire, 2024 was Wood and 2012 was Water.
In the legend of the Great Race, the Jade Emperor ranked the animals by the order they crossed a great river. The Dragon could fly and was expected to win, but in many tellings it stopped to bring rain to a village in drought, then gave a puff of wind to help the struggling Rabbit ashore. So it arrived fifth, just behind the Rabbit. Read the whole story on our Chinese zodiac guide.
Say 我属龙 (wǒ shǔ lóng), literally “I belong to the dragon”. To ask someone else, say 你属什么? (nǐ shǔ shénme?), “What’s your sign?”. It’s a polite, roundabout way to guess someone’s age, since the answer narrows it to every 12 years.
