The Chinese Zodiac

Twelve animals, one ancient race, and a calendar that still shapes birthdays, weddings and small talk across the Chinese-speaking world. Find your animal, meet all twelve, and learn to say it in Mandarin.

Up next: the Year of the Goat 羊 begins on 6 February 2027

What’s my Chinese zodiac animal?

Uses your full date of birth, because the zodiac year starts at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January. Exact for every date from 1900 to 2099.

The zodiac wheel

The twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac sit in a fixed circle, in the order they finished the Great Race. Each one rules a year, a two-hour slice of the day and a direction of the compass, so the wheel is also a clock and a map. Tap any animal to meet it.

The 12 Chinese zodiac animals

In order, with recent years and the character each one is written with. The traits are the traditional ones, so treat them as folklore, not fate.

The origin story

The legend of the Great Race

鼠Long ago, the Jade Emperor decided to name the years after animals, and announced a race: the first twelve to cross the great river would win a place in the calendar, in the order they arrived. The Rat and the Cat, the best of friends but poor swimmers, asked the kind-hearted Ox for a ride on his back. Halfway across, the Rat pushed the Cat into the water. Just as the Ox reached the bank, the Rat leapt from his head and scampered over the line first. So the Rat leads the zodiac and the faithful Ox comes second.

The Tiger, exhausted from fighting the current, came third. The Rabbit hopped across on stepping stones and a floating log to take fourth. The Dragon, who could have flown straight over, arrived fifth: he’d stopped to bring rain to a parched village, and gave the struggling Rabbit a puff of wind along the way. Next came the sound of hooves. The Horse galloped up, but the Snake had been coiled around its hoof all along, and darted out to claim sixth, leaving the startled Horse seventh.

The Goat, the Monkey and the Rooster found a raft and worked together, the Rooster spotting the way and the Monkey and Goat clearing the weeds, so the Emperor named them eighth, ninth and tenth. The Dog, the best swimmer of all, couldn’t resist playing in the water and paddled in eleventh. Last came the Pig, who’d stopped for a feast and a nap. And the Cat? It arrived long after the race was over. They say that’s why cats have chased rats ever since.

Like most folk tales, the Great Race has many versions. In some the Dragon helps the Rabbit, in others the Rooster rides the raft alone. The order of the animals, though, never changes.

How it works

Animals, elements and the 60-year cycle

In the Chinese zodiac, every year has a two-character Chinese name. The second character is one of the twelve Earthly Branches (地支 dìzhī), and each branch is an animal: 午 wǔ is the Horse, 未 wèi is the Goat. The first character is one of ten Heavenly Stems (天干 tiāngān), which come in pairs for the five elements.

木Wood甲乙 · ends in 4, 5
火Fire丙丁 · ends in 6, 7
土Earth戊己 · ends in 8, 9
金Metal庚辛 · ends in 0, 1
水Water壬癸 · ends in 2, 3

Ten stems against twelve branches line up again only every 60 years. That’s why a Fire Horse year such as 2026 (丙午 bǐngwǔ) last happened in 1966, and why reaching 60, your first full cycle, is such a big birthday in Chinese culture. There’s a shortcut, too: the last digit of any year gives its element, as the chips above show.

Each animal also has a fixed element and is either yin or yang. The yang animals (Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Dog) alternate with the yin animals (Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, Pig) all the way round the wheel.

The January trap. The zodiac year starts at Chinese New Year, which moves between 21 January and 20 February. Anyone born in January or early February may belong to the previous animal. The finder at the top of this page, and the chart below, use the exact date.

The twelve animals in Mandarin

Every animal is a single character, and most are among the first characters learners meet. Tap to hear each one, then try the most useful zodiac question in Chinese.

你属什么?

nǐ shǔ shénme?

“What’s your zodiac sign?”, literally “What do you belong to?”

我属马。

wǒ shǔ mǎ.

“I’m a Horse.” Swap in your own animal.

生肖

shēngxiào

The zodiac, or your zodiac animal. Also called 属相 shǔxiang.

本命年

běnmìngnián

Your own animal’s year, when tradition says to wear red for luck.

Asking 你属什么? is a polite way to work out someone’s age without asking it, because the answer narrows it to one year in twelve. Want to write the characters too? Each animal page shows its stroke order, and you can practise on the free writing practice board.
