What you’ll find in every lesson
These six principles aren’t marketing copy — they’re how Will has taught Mandarin for years, and what his students mention most in their reviews.
Flexible
Lessons adapt to your schedule, energy and learning style — no rigid curriculum that ignores how you learn best.
Structured
Every lesson has clear goals and builds logically on the last. You always know exactly where you are in your journey.
Versatile
Whether you want business Mandarin, travel phrases or character study, every lesson is shaped around your specific purpose.
Strategic
Time is finite. Will focuses on the highest-leverage vocabulary and structures so your progress feels fast without cutting corners.
Balanced
Speaking, listening, reading and writing all get attention. You won’t be fluent in one skill while the others lag behind.
Personalised
No two students get the same lesson plan. Your goals, your gaps, your background — all of it shapes every session.
Why one-on-one with a native speaker beats an app
Apps and group classes can only take you so far. Here is what changes when a native-speaker tutor builds every lesson around you.
One-on-one with Will
- Lessons built entirely around your goals
- Instant, personal feedback every session
- Real speaking practice with a native speaker
- Your pace, your schedule
- A real person keeping you accountable
Group classes
- One pace for the whole room
- Little individual feedback
- Limited speaking time each
- A fixed timetable to fit
- Some accountability
Language apps
- Generic, one-size-fits-all
- No real feedback
- Almost no real speaking
- Flexible, but easy to quit
- No accountability
Every WillyChina course is taught one-on-one by Will, a native Mandarin speaker who grew up between China and Australia — so your tones, your grammar and your confidence all get real, individual attention from the very first lesson. Meet your teacher →

What students say
Real students, real results — from complete beginners to confident conversationalists.
“I went from zero Mandarin to holding basic conversations in three months. Will’s patience and the way he breaks down the tones makes what felt impossible feel genuinely achievable.”
“I was nervous about starting — I’d tried apps before and always felt lost. Will’s lessons are well-paced, engaging and never overwhelming. I actually look forward to them each week.”
Online Mandarin course FAQs
How much do online Mandarin lessons cost?
Lessons start from $50 per hour for the Traveller and Basics courses, and $60 per hour for Intermediate, Business Mandarin and HSK Preparation. There is no lock-in contract — you can pay by the hour, and packages are available at a friendlier rate with a free coursebook included.
How are the lessons taught?
Every lesson is live and one-on-one with Will, online via Zoom or Google Meet. You will need a reliable internet connection and around 45–60 minutes — nothing else. Lessons are fully tailored to your level and goals, not a fixed video course.
Do I need any prior experience?
None at all. The Basics course starts from absolute zero — pronunciation, the four tones and pinyin from day one — in a structured, logical way that first-time learners find easy to follow.
How long does it take to learn Mandarin?
Most students hold simple conversations within three to six months of weekly lessons, and reach comfortable fluency in twelve to eighteen months. See our full guide on how long it takes to learn Mandarin for realistic timelines by level.
Are the courses one-on-one or group classes?
Courses are primarily one-on-one, so every minute is focused on you. Small-group lessons (maximum two students) are also available if you would like to learn alongside a partner or friend.
What is included in each lesson?
Live teaching with a native speaker, materials tailored to your goals, native-audio practice and immediate feedback. If you choose a package, a WillyChina coursebook is included free to guide your practice between lessons.
Can you help me prepare for the HSK exam?
Yes. The HSK Preparation course covers all bands (HSK 1–6) with vocabulary drills, mock exams and exam-day technique, planned backwards from your test date.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Every learner starts with a free 30-minute intro call to discuss your goals and map out a plan — no obligation and no sales pitch. It is the best way to see if we are the right fit before you book.
What currency are the prices in, and how do I pay?
Prices are listed in US dollars by default. If you would prefer to discuss local options, just mention it on your intro call and we will sort out the details.
What if I need to reschedule a lesson?
Scheduling is flexible and built around your week, including evenings and weekends. Just give reasonable notice and we will move your lesson — no fuss.
“I went from zero Mandarin to holding basic conversations in three months. The lessons are structured, focused and actually enjoyable — something I never expected language learning to be.”
