Are you a Monkey?
The zodiac year doesn’t start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which falls anywhere from 21 January to 20 February. So if you were born in January or February, your birth year alone can’t tell you your animal. Enter your full date of birth for the exact answer.

Dates follow the lunar calendar’s New Year, the convention used for the zodiac in everyday Chinese life. Some fortune-tellers instead start the year at 立春 (lìchūn, Start of Spring, around 4 February), so a few early-February birthdays get read differently. In 2028 the order is reversed: New Year comes first, on 26 January, and 立春 follows on 4 February.
How to write 猴, and why it isn’t a picture
Unlike 羊 (goat) or 马 (horse), 猴 (hóu) doesn’t draw its animal. It’s a sound-and-meaning compound: the dog radical 犭 on the left files it under animals, and 侯 (hóu, marquis) on the right supplies the sound. The Shuowen Jiezi (c. 100 CE) analyses it in exactly those terms and glosses it with an older word, 夒 (náo, a monkey). That older word is where the picture lives: Shang oracle bones carry a crouching monkey drawn in profile, which scholars generally read as 夒 rather than as 猴 itself.

Six characters that share 猴‘s parts
Hardly any everyday character contains the whole of 猴, but both of its halves are busy. 侯 lends its sound to a family of hóu and hòu words, and 犭 marks animal after animal. Tap the speaker to hear each one.

Monkey, ape or Monkey King?
On its own, 猴 mostly lives in writing and in set words like the zodiac sign. In everyday speech people say 猴子 (hóuzi), with the little noun suffix 子 that turns up on many animal words. Chinese also draws the same line English does between monkeys and apes, which is useful when you’re at the zoo.
猴子
hóuzi
Monkey, the everyday word.
猕猴
míhóu
Macaque, including the rhesus monkey.
猿
yuán
Ape. Together, 猿猴 yuánhóu covers apes and monkeys alike.
猩猩
xīngxing
Orangutan. Add 大 for gorilla (大猩猩) or 黑 for chimpanzee (黑猩猩).
The most famous monkey of all settles the question. Sun Wukong, hero of Journey to the West, is a 猴, a stone monkey, never an ape. Arthur Waley’s much-loved 1942 English abridgement was simply called Monkey, and that is the name most English readers still know him by.
The Monkey personality
Zodiac personalities are folk tradition, not science, and Chinese people treat them much the way others treat star signs: half seriously, often with a smile. Still, the character traditionally given to people born in the Year of the Monkey is remarkably consistent across almanacs. It’s the quickest mind of the twelve, and the most mischievous.
Clever
cōngming. Quick to learn and quicker to solve problems. Monkeys are said to see the answer while everyone else is still reading the question.
Quick-witted
jīling. Sharp, nimble and good in a tight spot. A Monkey usually has a plan B, and a plan C.
Curious
hàoqí. Interested in everything, from new places to how a gadget works. Boredom is the Monkey’s natural enemy.
Funny
yōumò. The entertainer of the zodiac: witty, sociable and the friend who makes the dinner party.
And the other side
Mischievous
tiáopí. The same playfulness that charms can tip into pranks that land badly, even when no harm is meant.
Restless
fúzào. Impatient with routine and quick to move on before a job is finished.
Self-assured to a fault
zìfù. Monkeys know they’re clever, and tradition warns that they can let others know it too.
Easily distracted
sān xīn èr yì. An idiom, “three hearts, two minds”, for chasing several things at once and committing to none.
Lucky things, by tradition
Almanacs don’t fully agree on the Monkey’s lucky charms, and we’d rather show you that than pretend otherwise. Here is what the major sources share, and where they split.
| Lucky | What the sources say | Agreement |
|---|---|---|
| Numbers | 4 and 9 in most English-language lists, some adding 1; a few Chinese almanacs give 2 and 3 instead | Mostly |
| Colours | White, gold and blue in the major lists, with green added in some Chinese almanacs | Agreed |
| Flowers | Chrysanthemum in most lists, with crape myrtle, lily or lucky bamboo depending on the source | Mostly |
| Numbers to avoid | 2 and 7 in English-language lists, 5 and 9 in some Chinese almanacs | Disputed |
Which Monkey are you? The five elements
Every animal returns once every 12 years, but it pairs with each of the five elements only once every 60. So a 1968 Monkey and a 2028 Monkey share both animal and element: both are Earth Monkeys.
甲申 jiǎshēn · 1944 · 2004
The Wood Monkey is said to be the most dependable Monkey: lively and helpful, with a strong sense of responsibility. Its traditional weakness is a stubborn streak, and sometimes less confidence than it shows.
丙申 bǐngshēn · 1956 · 2016
The Fire Monkey is the most competitive Monkey: ambitious, outgoing and adventurous. Tradition warns of a quick temper and impulsive decisions, and 2016 was its most recent year.
戊申 wùshēn · 1968 · 2028
The Earth Monkey is said to be the steadiest of the five: frank, loyal and more grounded than its restless cousins. 2028 is an Earth Monkey year, and tradition reads Earth as calming the Monkey’s cleverness into practical plans.
庚申 gēngshēn · 1920 · 1980 · 2040
Metal is the Monkey’s own fixed element, so the Metal Monkey is the purest Monkey: confident, decisive and independent. It’s said to be brilliant but strong-willed, and slow to take advice.
壬申 rénshēn · 1932 · 1992
The Water Monkey is the most adaptable Monkey: smart, quick and at ease in the limelight. Its traditional weakness is going along with the crowd rather than its own opinion.
Monkey compatibility
Zodiac compatibility isn’t a list of opinions. It’s geometry. Place the twelve animals around a circle, and the classic matches form fixed shapes: triangles of allies, pairs of secret friends, and opposites that clash. Here is the Monkey’s position.
- Best: Rat 鼠 and Dragon 龙The Three Harmonies (三合 sānhé), the green triangle. These three share quick minds and big ambitions, and tradition calls them the strongest team for work, friendship or marriage.
- Secret friend: Snake 蛇The Six Harmonies (六合 liùhé), the gold line. The careful Snake steadies the restless Monkey, though classical texts also pair these two in a “punishment” relation, so the bond is famously double-edged.
- Clash: Tiger 虎The Six Conflicts (六冲 liùchōng), straight across the circle. The bold Tiger and the clever Monkey both want to lead, and tradition rates them the hardest match.
- Friction: Pig 猪The Six Harms (六害 liùhài), the dashed line. A quieter mismatch: the trusting Pig can feel outwitted by the Monkey’s schemes.
See the other pairings from each side: the Rat, the Dragon, the Snake and the Tiger.
The Monkey in Chinese culture
孙悟空 The Monkey King
Sūn Wùkōng. The stone-born hero of Journey to the West, the 16th-century novel traditionally attributed to Wu Cheng’en. Heaven gives him a lowly post, 弼马温 (bìmǎwēn), keeper of the heavenly horses, and the title is often read as a pun on 避马瘟 “ward off horse plague”. That echoes a real custom: the 6th-century farming manual Qimin Yaoshu advises keeping a macaque in the stable to keep horses well.
马上封侯 A monkey on horseback
mǎshàng fēng hóu. A favourite lucky picture: a monkey riding a horse. Because 猴 (monkey) and 侯 (marquis) sound the same, “a monkey on a horse” also reads “made a marquis at once”, since 马上 mǎshàng means both “on horseback” and “right away”. It turns up on jade pendants, carvings and New Year prints as a wish for quick promotion.
朝三暮四 Three in the morning
zhāo sān mù sì. In the Zhuangzi, a monkey keeper offers his monkeys three acorns in the morning and four at night. They are furious, so he offers four in the morning and three at night, and they are delighted. Zhuangzi used it to mock people fooled by labels; today it usually means fickle. One of the best-known Chinese idioms.
金丝猴 The golden monkey
jīnsīhóu, “golden-thread monkey”. The golden snub-nosed monkey, with its blue face and gold coat, lives only in the mountain forests of Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi and Hubei, and is one of China’s most strictly protected animals. It’s the monkey in our illustration above. Read more in our Sichuan guide.

The Year of the Earth Monkey, 2028
The Earth Monkey year, 戊申年 (wùshēn nián), runs from 26 January 2028 to 12 February 2029. Earth is said to steady the Monkey’s restless cleverness, so tradition reads 2028 as a year for practical plans, study and building on skills. For the festival itself, the fifteen days and the greetings, see our Spring Festival guide.
běnmìngnián, “your own zodiac year”. If you were born in a Monkey year (2016, 2004, 1992, 1980, 1968…), 2028 is your 本命年. Tradition says it’s a year to be careful, so many people wear something red all year round, often red socks, a red string bracelet or red underwear, which shops sell in a rush before every New Year.
Talk about your sign in Mandarin
Asking someone’s zodiac animal is one of the most natural small-talk questions in Chinese, and a polite way to guess an age without asking. Here is the whole conversation.
我属猴
wǒ shǔ hóu
“I’m a Monkey,” literally “I belong to the monkey”.
你属什么?
nǐ shǔ shénme?
“What’s your zodiac sign?”
你也属猴吗?
nǐ yě shǔ hóu ma?
“Are you a Monkey too?”
今年是我的本命年。
jīnnián shì wǒ de běnmìngnián.
“This year is my zodiac year.”
Common misunderstandings
- “I was born on 10 February 1980, so I’m a Monkey.” Not quite: the Monkey year only began on 16 February 1980, so you’re an Earth Goat. It works the other way too: Jennifer Aniston, born 11 February 1969, would be a Rooster by calendar year but is an Earth Monkey. Check any date with the tool above.
- “The zodiac Monkey is the Monkey King.” Sun Wukong borrowed the sign’s reputation, not the other way round. The scholar Wang Chong already paired the branch 申 (shēn) with the monkey in the Lunheng, written in the 1st century CE, more than a thousand years before Journey to the West.
- “Monkey and ape are the same sign.” The sign is 猴, monkey. Ape is a different word, 猿 (yuán), and the zodiac never uses it.
- “All Monkeys are Fire Monkeys.” 2016 was a Fire Monkey year, which is why the phrase stuck, but the Monkey’s own fixed element is Metal. Each Monkey year also carries a rotating element, and 2028 is Earth.

FAQs
The Year of the Monkey comes round every 12 years: 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016 and 2028. Each one starts at Chinese New Year rather than on 1 January. The next begins on 26 January 2028 and runs to 12 February 2029.
Yes. 2028 is an Earth Monkey year (戊申 wùshēn). It begins on 26 January 2028. Anyone born between 1 and 25 January 2028 is still a Goat, the sign of the year before.
Not originally. The zodiac Monkey, 猴 (hóu), was paired with its Earthly Branch by the 1st century CE, long before Sun Wukong appeared in the 16th-century novel Journey to the West. Today, though, the Monkey King is never far away when a Monkey year comes round.
Traditionally the Rat and the Dragon, which form the Three Harmonies (三合) with the Monkey, and the Snake, its Six Harmonies (六合) partner. The Tiger is the Monkey’s clash sign, sitting directly opposite on the zodiac wheel.
Most English-language lists give 4 and 9 as the Monkey’s lucky numbers, though some Chinese almanacs give 2 and 3. For colours the sources agree on white, gold and blue. These are folk associations, so treat them as tradition rather than rules.
The Monkey’s fixed element is Metal, and it’s a yang sign. Each Monkey year also carries a rotating element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water), set by the year’s heavenly stem. 2028 is Earth, 2016 was Fire and 2004 was Wood.
In the legend of the Great Race, the Jade Emperor ranked the animals by the order they crossed a great river. In the most common telling, the Monkey shared a raft with the Goat and the Rooster, and the three reached the far bank together, ranked eighth, ninth and tenth. Read the whole story on our Chinese zodiac guide.
Say 我属猴 (wǒ shǔ hóu), literally “I belong to the monkey”. To ask someone else, say 你属什么? (nǐ shǔ shénme?), “What’s your sign?”. It’s a polite, roundabout way to guess someone’s age, since the answer narrows it to every 12 years.
