Meet Will
Your native Mandarin teacher — born in China, raised in Sydney, Australia, with over a decade of experience helping learners around the world speak Mandarin with confidence and cultural depth.
My story
I’m Will — a native Mandarin speaker, born in China and raised in Sydney, Australia. Growing up bilingual gave me something most language teachers don’t have: an instinctive feel for both sides of the bridge. I know what makes Mandarin click for an English speaker, because I’ve lived in both worlds since I was small.
I’ve been teaching Mandarin online for over ten years. In that time I’ve worked with complete beginners taking their first tonal steps, professionals preparing for high-stakes meetings in Shanghai, travellers learning to order beef noodles in Lanzhou, and second-generation heritage learners reconnecting to their family’s language. Every learner is different — and that’s the part of this job I love.
WillyChina is the studio where I do that work full-time. One teacher, one student, no rotating tutors, no app gamification, no shortcuts that promise fluency in seven days. Real lessons, real progress, real Mandarin.
Born in China. Raised in Sydney. Built to bridge both worlds.
I grew up speaking Mandarin at home and English everywhere else — not by accident, but because that was simply life after my family moved to Sydney when I was young. Rather than losing one language for the other, I held onto both, and that unusual vantage point became the foundation of how I teach.
Most Mandarin teachers either grew up entirely in China and struggle to see why tones and characters feel so foreign to Western learners, or they’re heritage speakers who never quite reached full fluency. I sit at a different intersection: a genuine native Mandarin speaker who also thinks natively in English and has lived the experience of navigating two cultures every day. That’s what a Mandarin teacher built to bridge both worlds looks like.
Why WillyChina exists
Most language apps treat Mandarin as a vocabulary problem. Memorise 500 words, then 1,000, then 2,000. But Mandarin isn’t really a vocabulary problem. It’s a perspective problem — a different way of carving the world into words.
Learning Mandarin changed my relationship with my own culture — and I’ve seen it do the same for students from every background. You don’t need a perfect ear or a perfect memory. You just need curiosity, consistency, and someone who genuinely understands how to guide you from where you are.
— Will, Founder & Mandarin teacher, WillyChina
WillyChina exists to teach Mandarin the way it’s actually used — with the cultural context, the dialect flavour, the historical depth and the everyday warmth that turn vocabulary into communication. Every lesson is built around a real person’s goals, not a generic curriculum.
What makes WillyChina different
Bicultural perspective
Born in China, raised in Sydney, Australia — I understand both how Mandarin works from the inside and how it feels to learn it as a Western adult. That dual perspective shapes every lesson.
True 1-on-1
One teacher (me), one student (you), and a lesson built entirely around your goals. Not a marketplace, not a chatbot, not a rotating cast of tutors — just consistent, focused teaching.
Cultural depth
Language is culture. Every lesson connects vocabulary and grammar to the food, history, regions and everyday life that give words their meaning. You learn Mandarin and China together.
How I teach Mandarin
Conversation-first
You speak from lesson one — not from lesson fifty. Tones, characters and grammar slot in around real conversation, the way native speakers actually use the language.
Cultural context
Every grammar point and vocab item lands inside a real cultural story — food, dialect, history, region. Words stick when they actually mean something to you.
Personalised pace
I adapt every lesson to your goals, your schedule and what’s working for you. No fixed curriculum — your learning, your way, at the speed that suits you best.
Goal-driven
HSK exam, business meeting, travel survival, heritage reconnection — every plan is built around what you actually want to do in Mandarin, not a textbook checklist.
Why work with a real Mandarin teacher
A Mandarin teacher you actually meet with each week does something an app cannot: hold a conversation back. Standard Mandarin has four tones and roughly 50,000 characters in active use — a real Mandarin teacher reads your face, hears your tones, catches the moment you nearly understand, and adjusts in real time. No language app, however clever, can do that yet.
A real Mandarin teacher also brings the cultural memory that gives the language its meaning — the food, the history, the regional flavour. That’s the difference between speaking Mandarin and speaking like a Mandarin speaker. About Will, your Mandarin teacher
What makes a good Mandarin teacher?
A good Mandarin teacher is a native or near-native speaker who can also explain how the language works to a learner — the tones, the characters, the grammar — without losing the cultural depth that makes the language come alive. Look for someone who teaches conversation first, adapts to your goals, and treats every lesson as a one-of-a-kind session, not a recycled curriculum.
Where are you based?
I’m based in Australia and teach Mandarin online to learners worldwide. Lessons run over Zoom or Google Meet — there’s no commute, no waiting room, no friction. All you need is a stable internet connection and the willingness to speak.
How long does it take to learn Mandarin with a 1-on-1 Mandarin teacher?
Most adult learners working with a regular Mandarin teacher reach comfortable conversational ability in 6–12 months of weekly lessons. HSK 3 (intermediate) typically takes 12–18 months at a steady pace. Heritage learners often move faster because the ear is already tuned. The pace always depends on consistency more than raw study time.
Can I try a lesson before I commit?
Yes — every new student gets a free 30-minute introductory call with me before any commitment. We use the time to talk about your goals, your starting level, what’s worked for you and what hasn’t, and whether I’m the right Mandarin teacher for your situation. No pressure, no payment, no hard sell. Book yours here.
