Are you a Goat?
The zodiac year doesn’t start on 1 January. It starts at Chinese New Year, which falls anywhere from 21 January to 20 February. So if you were born in January or February, your birth year alone can’t tell you your animal. Enter your full date of birth for the exact answer.

Dates follow the lunar calendar’s New Year, the convention used for the zodiac in everyday Chinese life. Some fortune-tellers instead start the year at 立春 (lìchūn, Start of Spring, around 4 February), so a few early-February birthdays get read differently. In 2027 the two fall just two days apart: 立春 on 4 February, New Year on the 6th.
How to write 羊, and what it really draws
羊 (yáng) is one of the oldest pictures in the Chinese writing system. Look at it head-on: the two short strokes at the top are a pair of horns, the three horizontals are the face and ears, and the long vertical stroke runs down the nose. It isn’t a whole animal in profile. It’s a sheep’s or goat’s head seen from the front, and it has kept that shape for more than 3,000 years.

Six characters built from 羊
Sheep mattered so much in early China that 羊 became a building block for some of the language’s warmest ideas. Sometimes it brings meaning, and sometimes it brings sound. Tap the speaker to hear each one.

Goat, sheep or ram?
All three are right, which is why English sources can’t agree. In Chinese, 羊 on its own covers the whole family of horned grazers. When Chinese speakers need to be precise, they add a word in front. In 2015, the last Year of the Goat, newspapers around the world argued over “Sheep or Goat?” for weeks. The answer was always both.
山羊
shānyáng
Goat. Literally “mountain 羊”, the climber with a beard.
绵羊
miányáng
Sheep. Literally “cotton-soft 羊”, the woolly one.
公羊
gōngyáng
Ram, a male sheep or goat.
小羊
xiǎoyáng
Lamb or kid, a young 羊.
Zodiac art reflects the same freedom. Paintings from the grasslands of the north often show a woolly sheep, while New Year prints from the south tend to show a bearded goat. We use “Goat”, the most common choice in English today.
The Goat personality
Zodiac personalities are folk tradition, not science, and Chinese people treat them much the way others treat star signs: half seriously, often with a smile. Still, the character traditionally given to people born in the Year of the Goat is remarkably consistent across centuries of almanacs. It’s the gentlest of the twelve.
Gentle
wēnhé. Calm, mild and slow to anger. Goats prefer peace to winning arguments, and people relax around them.
Kind-hearted
shànliáng. Generous with time and sympathy. Notice the 羊 sitting on top of 善: the language itself files kindness under Goat.
Artistic
yìshù. The zodiac’s aesthete: an eye for beauty, colour and craft, happiest when making something.
Considerate
tǐtiē. Quick to sense how others feel, and the friend who remembers what you said last month.
And the other side
Indecisive
yōuróu guǎduàn. An idiom for weighing every option until the moment has passed.
Sensitive
mǐngǎn. The same empathy that makes Goats kind can make criticism land hard.
A worrier
ài cāoxīn. Goats tend to fret about tomorrow, and about everyone else’s tomorrow too.
A homebody
liànjiā. Stability and a comfortable home matter more to a Goat than adventure.
Lucky things, by tradition
Almanacs don’t fully agree on the Goat’s lucky charms, and we’d rather show you that than pretend otherwise. Here is what the major sources share, and where they split.
| Lucky | What the sources say | Agreement |
|---|---|---|
| Numbers | 2 and 7, and numbers made of them, such as 27 or 72 | Agreed |
| Flowers | Carnation and primrose | Agreed |
| Colours | Red and purple everywhere, plus green or brown depending on the almanac | Mostly |
| Numbers to avoid | 4 and 9 in some lists, 3 and 8 or 6 and 8 in others | Disputed |
Which Goat are you? The five elements
Every animal returns once every 12 years, but it pairs with each of the five elements only once every 60. So a 1967 Goat and a 2027 Goat share both animal and element: both are Fire Goats.
乙未 yǐwèi · 1955 · 2015
The Wood Goat is said to be the most generous of the five: warm, trusting and easily moved. Its traditional caution is to give a little less of itself away.
丁未 dīngwèi · 1967 · 2027
The Fire Goat is the boldest Goat: expressive and creative, with more drive and flair than its gentle cousins. It’s said to be a natural performer whose challenge is patience. 2027 is a Fire Goat year.
己未 jǐwèi · 1919 · 1979 · 2039
Earth is the Goat’s own fixed element, so the Earth Goat is the steadiest: dependable, practical and devoted to family. It’s said to worry less than other Goats.
辛未 xīnwèi · 1931 · 1991
The Metal Goat is said to be firmer and more determined than most Goats, with refined taste and a strong sense of what is right. It hides its tender side behind that firmness.
癸未 guǐwèi · 1943 · 2003
The Water Goat is the most adaptable Goat: diplomatic and popular, at ease in any company. Its traditional weakness is going along with others too readily.
Goat compatibility
Zodiac compatibility isn’t a list of opinions. It’s geometry. Place the twelve animals around a circle, and the classic matches form fixed shapes: triangles of allies, pairs of secret friends, and opposites that clash. Here is the Goat’s position.
- Best: Rabbit 兔 and Pig 猪The Three Harmonies (三合 sānhé), the green triangle. These three share a gentle, creative outlook and are traditionally the happiest pairing for friendship, business or marriage.
- Secret friend: Horse 马The Six Harmonies (六合 liùhé), the gold line. The Horse’s energy and the Goat’s calm balance each other.
- Clash: Ox 牛The Six Conflicts (六冲 liùchōng), straight across the circle. The dutiful Ox and the dreamy Goat pull in opposite directions.
- Friction: Rat 鼠The Six Harms (六害 liùhài), the dashed line. A milder mismatch that needs patience on both sides.
See the other pairings from each side: the Rabbit, the Pig, the Horse and the Ox.
The Goat in Chinese culture
羊城 The City of Rams
Guangzhou’s nickname is Yángchéng, the City of Rams. Legend says five immortals rode into the city on five rams, each carrying an ear of rice, and blessed the land so it would never know famine. A statue of the Five Rams has stood in Yuexiu Park since 1959. Read more in our Guangdong guide.
三阳开泰 Three goats bring luck
sān yáng kāi tài. A New Year blessing from the Book of Changes: three yang (阳) lines open the way to peace. Because 阳 and 羊 sound the same, New Year prints paint it as three goats, a pun that turns up on cards every Goat year.
亡羊补牢 Mend the pen
wáng yáng bǔ láo. “Lose a sheep, then fix the pen.” Told in the Strategies of the Warring States, it means it’s never too late to fix a mistake. One of the best-known Chinese idioms.
涮羊肉 Beijing’s lamb hotpot
shuàn yángròu. Paper-thin 羊肉 yángròu (lamb) swished through boiling broth, a northern winter ritual for centuries. In the north, the 羊 belongs on the table as much as in the zodiac.

The Year of the Fire Goat, 2027
The Fire Goat year, 丁未年 (dīngwèi nián), runs from 6 February 2027 to 25 January 2028. Fire is said to warm the Goat’s gentle nature into something bolder, so tradition reads 2027 as a year for creative work, reconciliation and home. For the full festival, the fifteen days and the greetings, see Chinese New Year 2027.
běnmìngnián, “your own zodiac year”. If you were born in a Goat year (2015, 2003, 1991, 1979, 1967…), 2027 is your 本命年. Tradition says it’s a year to be careful, so many people wear something red all year round, often red socks, a red string bracelet or red underwear, which shops sell in a rush before every New Year.
Talk about your sign in Mandarin
Asking someone’s zodiac animal is one of the most natural small-talk questions in Chinese, and a polite way to guess an age without asking. Here is the whole conversation.
我属羊
wǒ shǔ yáng
“I’m a Goat,” literally “I belong to the goat”.
你属什么?
nǐ shǔ shénme?
“What’s your zodiac sign?”
你也属羊吗?
nǐ yě shǔ yáng ma?
“Are you a Goat too?”
今年是我的本命年。
jīnnián shì wǒ de běnmìngnián.
“This year is my zodiac year.”
Common misunderstandings
- “I was born in January 1992, so I’m a Monkey.” Not quite: the Monkey year only began on 4 February 1992, so you’re a Metal Goat. Check any date with the tool above.
- “The Goat is the unlucky sign.” There’s an old saying, 十羊九不全 (shí yáng jiǔ bù quán, “of ten Goats, nine are incomplete”). Its origin is unclear (a popular story links it to the late Qing and the Empress Dowager Cixi, born in a Goat year), and it has no basis in classical astrology. Plenty of families happily welcome Goat babies.
- “Sheep and goat are two different signs.” There’s only one, 羊. Sheep, goat and ram are all translations of the same character.
- “Your zodiac changes your daily horoscope.” Chinese zodiac readings work by year, not by day or month. The twelve months and hours also have animals, but that belongs to a full birth chart.

FAQs
The Year of the Goat comes round every 12 years: 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015 and 2027. Each one starts at Chinese New Year rather than on 1 January. The next begins on 6 February 2027 and runs to 25 January 2028.
Yes. 2027 is a Fire Goat year (丁未 dīngwèi). It begins on 6 February 2027. Anyone born between 1 January and 5 February 2027 is still a Horse, the sign of the year before.
Both. The Chinese character 羊 (yáng) covers goats, sheep and rams. Chinese adds a word to be specific (山羊 for goat, 绵羊 for sheep), but the zodiac sign is just 羊. “Goat” is the more common English choice.
Traditionally the Rabbit and the Pig, which form the Three Harmonies (三合) with the Goat, and the Horse, its Six Harmonies (六合) partner. The Ox is the Goat’s clash sign, sitting directly opposite on the zodiac wheel.
The sources agree on 2 and 7 as the Goat’s lucky numbers, and on carnations and primroses as its flowers. For colours, red and purple appear in every list, with green or brown added depending on the almanac. These are folk associations, so treat them as tradition rather than rules.
The Goat’s fixed element is Earth, and it’s a yin sign. Each Goat year also carries a rotating element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water), set by the year’s heavenly stem. 2027 is Fire, 2015 was Wood and 2003 was Water.
In the legend of the Great Race, the Jade Emperor ranked the animals by the order they crossed a great river. The Goat crossed together with the Monkey and the Rooster, working as a team on a raft, and reached the far bank eighth. Read the whole story on our Chinese zodiac guide.
Say 我属羊 (wǒ shǔ yáng), literally “I belong to the goat”. To ask someone else, say 你属什么? (nǐ shǔ shénme?), “What’s your sign?”. It’s a polite, roundabout way to guess someone’s age, since the answer narrows it to every 12 years.
