You can read the 195 words.
Now write them.

The free Band 5 list gives you the words and the audio. This HSK 3.0 Band 5 workbook puts them in your hand — every character traced, every word heard at two speeds, and drilled both ways until you can produce them, not just recognise them.

One payment. No subscription, no expiry. An hour of one-to-one costs US$36 — this is yours for good.

Hear every word, twice over

Tap any word below to hear it — the same recording that arrives in your download. Every one of the 195 words is recorded at natural speed and again slowed down, so you can shadow it rather than guess at it.

7 of 195. Every word in the pack is recorded twice and indexed, so you can find any of them in seconds.

Stroke order, then your own hand

Every character gets its stroke sequence shown step by step, with the new stroke in red — then a row to practise in. The first square is printed faintly to trace; the rest are yours. Order matters: a character written in the wrong sequence looks wrong even when every stroke is present.

天 · tiān · sky; day — one of 248 rows, laid out in 田字格 (tiánzìgé) guides so the character sits correctly.

Each character is traced once, in the category where it first appears, and labelled with the Band 5 words that use it. Band 5 is built from a shared pool of characters, so tracing them once per word would have repeated more than a third of the rows — 天 alone would have come round eight times. Seeing where a character turns up is more useful than meeting it cold, over and over.

Why Band 5, and why writing?

Band 5 is the fifth list in our HSK 3.0 series. The official HSK standard is published by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation and administered by Chinese Testing International.

It holds the rest of the official Level 3 words — 195 of them, on travel, home and school — so with Bands 1 to 4 you have every one of the 1,000 words in Levels 1 to 3. If you have finished Band 4, this is where to go next.

The reason to write them rather than only read them is that reading is recognition and writing is production, and only the second one proves you actually hold the character. Writing forces you to notice which strokes, in which order, in what proportion — and that noticing is what makes a character survive a month later. It is also the fastest cure for mixing up look-alike characters.

Who this is for

A good fit if

  • You are working through the new HSK 3.0 standard from the start
  • You can recognise words but freeze when asked to write one
  • You learn better with a pen than with an app
  • You want to own your materials rather than rent them

Probably not if

  • You only want to speak, and never intend to read or write
  • You have not finished Band 4 yet, in which case start there
  • You want video lessons; this is practice material, not a course
  • You would rather have a teacher, in which case book a free call instead

Who made this

I grew up speaking Mandarin at home and English everywhere else, after my family moved to Sydney when I was young. Most Mandarin teachers either grew up entirely in China and struggle to see why characters feel so foreign, or they are heritage speakers who never quite reached full fluency. I sit at a different intersection — a native speaker who also remembers what it is to learn from the outside.

By Band 5 the new standard expects you to write, and writing is the part almost everyone skips. This is that part, put into a form you can work through on your own.

Already have the Band 1 to 4 packs? All 195 of these words are new on top of them — none repeats an earlier band — so this is new ground rather than revision.

Questions

Is this a subscription?

No. It is one payment. The files are yours to keep and re-download on any device, forever.

What exactly do I get?

One zip, about 8 megabytes: a 82-page PDF workbook with stroke order and tracing for all 248 characters in the Band 5 list, 390 MP3 audio files, and two Anki decks with import instructions.

I already have the Band 4 pack. Is this different?

Yes. All 195 words are new on top of Bands 1 to 4, so if you have worked through the Band 4 pack this is the natural next step rather than revision. If you have not, start with Band 4.

The word list is already free on this site. Why pay?

The free list is a reference, and it stays free. This is the practice: stroke order and tracing for every character, the words at two speeds, and flashcards in both directions. Recognising a word on a screen and being able to write it are different skills, and the first one feels like enough right up until it is not.

Why does the workbook trace characters rather than words?

Because Band 5 is mostly two-character words built from a shared pool. Tracing every character of every word would have repeated more than a third of the rows and traced 天 8 separate times. Each of the 248 characters is traced once, where it first appears, labelled with the Band 5 words that use it — so you see where it turns up rather than meeting it cold eight times.

Is this the new HSK standard or the old one?

The new one. Band 5 holds the last of the official Level 3 words, so Bands 1 to 5 together cover all 1,000 words of Levels 1 to 3 in the HSK 3.0 syllabus published by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation.

Do I need a printer?

For the tracing pages, yes — that is the point of them. The audio and the flashcards work entirely on screen.

What if the download does not work?

Reply to your receipt email and it will be sorted the same day. The link in your email keeps working, so you can also simply use it again.

Would you rather learn it with a teacher?

The workbook is the practice. If you want someone to correct your tones and your stroke order as you go, lessons are one-to-one and online, from US$36 an hour.
