What You’ll Cover

Six areas. Every component of the HSK — mastered.

The HSK tests vocabulary, reading, listening, writing and speaking across every level. Will’s preparation programme covers every section — with an emphasis on the areas where points are most commonly lost.

Vocabulary by HSK Level

Will drills every word on the official HSK word list for your target level — not just the meaning, but the usage, the tone and the grammar patterns that accompany it. You’ll encounter each word multiple times in context, not just on a flashcard.

Reading Comprehension

The reading section is where many students drop marks unnecessarily. Will teaches you to read for gist quickly, identify key information, and handle the question types that appear at your target level — including the sentence ordering and fill-in-the-blank tasks that trip up unprepared candidates.

Listening Practice

The HSK listening section uses authentic-speed audio with accents and natural speech patterns. Will trains your ear progressively — starting with clear, controlled speech and moving to realistic recordings at the pace and style you’ll face on exam day.

Speaking & Oral Exam

HSK speaking (HSKK) is a separate but complementary test that many students take alongside their written HSK. Will prepares you for all three parts — repeat, read aloud and answer from prompt — with the tones, pacing and confidence that examiners are looking for.

Writing & Characters

Higher HSK levels require written responses. Will covers the character writing requirements for your target level — stroke order, radicals, common writing errors and the grammar structures needed to write clear, accurate sentences under exam conditions.

Mock Exams & Exam Strategy

Timed mock exams under real exam conditions — then a full debrief with Will on exactly where marks were lost and how to reclaim them. You’ll also learn timing strategies, question prioritisation and how to handle sections where you’re unsure, so you walk in on exam day fully prepared.

Why 1-on-1 Preparation

Self-study gets you so far. A teacher gets you across the line.

Many HSK candidates study independently and plateau. Will identifies exactly what’s holding you back — and builds a targeted plan to fix it before exam day.

Targeted gap analysis

Will analyses your current level and identifies the exact vocabulary, grammar and comprehension gaps that are most likely to cost you marks. Every lesson is then focused on closing those specific gaps — not going over what you already know.

A plan that fits your exam date

Whether your exam is in six weeks or six months, Will builds a preparation timeline that is realistic and achievable. He won’t overpromise — but he will make sure you use every week of available time as effectively as possible.

Mock exams with real feedback

Not just a score — a full debrief. Will goes through every mistake with you, explains why it was wrong and what to do differently. Students who do mock exams with feedback consistently outperform those who only practise independently.

Getting Started

From first lesson to exam day — a clear plan

No contracts, no packages. Three simple steps to start your HSK preparation.

1

Book a free intro call

Tell Will your target HSK level, your exam date and your current Mandarin level. He’ll assess whether the timeline is realistic, identify your biggest gaps and outline exactly what preparation will look like for you.

2

Follow your tailored plan

Lessons systematically work through vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening for your target level — with regular mini-assessments to track your progress. Every session brings you measurably closer to exam readiness.

3

Sit your mock, then the real thing

In the final weeks, Will runs timed mock exams and full debriefs to sharpen exam technique and build confidence. You’ll know your weak points, your strategies and exactly what to expect on the day.

Student Stories

Students who passed — and what got them there

Real students who prepared for HSK with Will and came out the other side with their certificates.

★★★★★

“I’d attempted HSK 4 twice on my own and didn’t pass either time. Three months with Will and I passed comfortably — he found the exact gaps I’d been missing and drilled them until they were second nature. The mock exams were the difference maker.”

★★★★★

“Will’s approach to HSK preparation is methodical and thorough. He doesn’t just teach you to pass — he teaches you the language properly, so the exam feels like a natural checkpoint rather than a hurdle. I passed HSK 5 on my first attempt.”

Common Questions

Answers before you ask

Will offers preparation for HSK 1 through HSK 6 — covering the full range from complete beginner certification right through to near-native proficiency. He also teaches HSKK (the oral component) at all three levels: beginner, intermediate and advanced.
It depends on your current level and your target HSK level. For HSK 1 or 2 from beginner, eight to twelve weeks of regular lessons is usually sufficient. HSK 4 from an intermediate base typically takes three to six months. HSK 5 and 6 require more time — six to twelve months for most students. Will will give you an honest timeline assessment in your first call.
The new HSK (sometimes called HSK 3.0) expands from six levels to nine and introduces a significantly larger vocabulary requirement at each level, as well as a tighter integration of all four skills. Will teaches both the current sitting format and the evolving new standard — and will advise which version to target based on your goals and available exam dates.
General Mandarin lessons build a strong foundation, but HSK has specific vocabulary lists, question formats and time pressures that benefit from targeted preparation. Will typically recommends a dedicated exam-preparation phase in the weeks before your exam — even for students who have been learning with him for some time.
Yes. Timed mock exams under realistic conditions are a core part of Will’s HSK preparation. Each mock is followed by a detailed debrief — going through every question, every mistake and every strategy for improvement. The number of mocks depends on how much preparation time you have, but most students do at least two or three full practice tests before their exam date.
